Route 90

March 1, 2013

Texas, Near the Mexican Border

Desert Roadside Stop

Route 90 moving west in southern Texas, we stop in the town of Sanderson, in Terrell County, 20 miles north of the Mexican boarder but far away from any big city,  or border crossing, or even Walmart.  If you have seen the movie Bagdad Cafe, then you'll have an idea of the appearance and feel of this place.  Maybe further up the road there is more town but here it's empty, open, mostly sky and desert.   If you are thinking of moving Sanderson, you might want to know that the average home price is $50,000, they enjoy 300+ days of sun a year, and Terrell county, population 976, is the cactus capital of Texas.

Canyons RV Park, where we are camped for the night, sits between Rt. 90 and the train track.  Trucks and trains are a common sight and sound. The hospitable and freindly owner/manager, beautifully coiffed and bejeweled, rides her golf cart around the grounds getting her work done.

We'll be veering northwest soon, and begin heading towards New Mexico.  We're a bit behind schedule now.  Texas is big and we were held up with repairs a few weeks ago. Sad to miss our friends in Dallas, and now, Big Bend National Park too. But, we have to complete our trip in the months left. We still have a lot of road ahead of us!
