Beginning of the West

February 2013

Rounding the Texas coast now, going south, avoiding the bad weather to the north.  Got a little stalled here due to refrigerator  breakdown and waiting for parts in Houston. Still, overcast here, on the beach, near Corpus Cristi, Port Aransus.   We’re next to the port and can watch freighters come and go.  Rough seas, some surfers. Thinking about our trip being more than half over,  - time is going by fast........

Some observations about Texas.  Things I've noticed here:

Oil refineries

Cowboy hats

Cowboy boots

Ranches, cows, horses

Mexican influence: people, language, food, TV stations.

Guns:  A sign at a Mexican restaurant said in spanish and english:  It is illegal to enter the premisses with a concealed weapon without a license .....  (not reassuring, but it's meant to be a warning.)

Stray dogs

Drought

Talk of drought

Oil rigs always on the horizon when looking out to sea

The wealth here when compared to the southern Louisiana Bayous

We’re in the “West” in feel if not geographically - rest of the trip will take place mostly here.

Beautiful Port Aransas Sand Dunes
